Oculieve forms filtration “channels” in the sclera, instead of the conventional large blister, to vent the fluid. The cylindrical geometry of the Oculieve optimizes filtration capacity by providing sufficient surface area to vent fluid while minimizing surface tension. The main problem with current tube-plate shunts is that the large blister reservoir produces too much surface tension. The body reacts to tension by reinforcing the structure with collagen compromising the device’s performance.
