The K-Shaped Meat Grinder – What a Record Venture Market Means for Regions That Will Never See It

Tucson, AZ – 08/09/2026 – Executive Summary

H1 2026 set an all-time record for venture funding, at roughly $510 billion globally. Seed and angel funding fell 27% year over year. Emerging-manager fundraising collapsed 35%.
The record is an aggregation error. Strip out two foundation-model labs, and the funnel underneath is contracting in both dollars and deal count.

The concentration now appears within single-round stages. Carta’s Q2 data puts the top 5% of Series A rounds above $585 million post-money. The median Series A sits at $84 million.
A record exit quarter does not fix this. Recycled liquidity flows back into the same five corridors. It does not reach new company formation. That is tourist liquidity, and it should be named as such.

Borderless capital access is real. Geographic concentration reached an all-time high anyway. Access was never the binding constraint. Retention and readiness were.
For a K-selected region, an r-selected bubble that is starving its own seed layer is not a threat to wait out. It is the best arbitrage window in a decade, provided the region builds the vehicle to take advantage of it.
